Access files on your Android via Wi-Fi with Samba Filesharing

Want a nice, simple way to access files on your Android smartphone over a wireless network? Check out Samba Filesharing, an easy-to-configure app which lets you browse your SD card contents in your favorite desktop file manager.

After you install the app, launch it and create a password -- the default username is SDCARD, though you can change that if you wish. Once your changes have been made, tap your Back button to return to the main screen and then tap Menu to bring up the four action buttons. Disable and re-enable SMB services, and you'll receive a notification with the path to your device -- such as \\192.168.0.100 and \\ANDROID.

You can also configure the NetBIOS name (the ANDROID bit) if you want to use something a bit more personal. The app also features a 'wakelock' which keeps your Droid from dozing when you're trying to access files.

Root access is required, and you'll also need Superuser or Superuser Permissions installed (find one with a quick Market search).

AV-Test year-end report shows exponential growth of malware

Now, we don't need fancy graphs to tell us that malware is all over the place -- but it's certainly eye-opening to see just how bad the problem has gotten. Unique samples gathered by AV-Test Labs this year nearly doubled in 2010 -- to almost 20 million, up from 12 million in 2009. That's no doubt due to the ever-morphing horde of rogue applications, which now include bogus system tune-up software in addition to the traditional fake antivirus programs we have come to despise.

Thankfully, security vendors have really stepped up their game in the last two years. Clearly they're going to need to keep churning out smarter, more adaptive, and just plain better apps to keep users protected.

Those of you who want to read the full report can download the Excel sheet, courtesy Sunbelt Software.

Enchanted Keyfinder quickly discover or change your Windows and Office product keys

We've all been there: you need to reinstall Windows or Office, but you can't find the blasted product key! Perhaps you've mislaid the disc's paper wallet, or more commonly the sticker on the bottom of your laptop has been rubbed off. The only solution, other than grabbing a pirate version, is to use a tool like Enchanted Keyfinder.

Enchanted Keyfinder, which is free, open-source, and only 400KB big, does just two things: it shows you the product keys for your Windows (95, 98, ME, NT, 2K, XP, Vista and 7) and Office (2007 and 2010) installations -- and in the case of Windows XP, it also lets you change your product key. If you have a broken Windows installation, you can also use Enchanted Keyfinder with a Linux live CD; neat. There's also the option to export your product keys to a flat text file, which is probably a good idea!

In the next version, the developer wants to add remote registry access, which could be a handy tool for a system administrator. He also wants to add serial key snooping for other programs. Incidentally, if you're looking for a tool that can extract product keys from programs like Photoshop and Dreamweaver, Softkey Revealer is still going strong!

We?re Now Watching The ?You? News Network

Back in November, Reuters published an article titled "Twitter co-founder hopes to create news network" where Biz Stone mulled over the idea that Twitter could create a social news firehose based on verticals. While the erroneous headline ended up being debunked by Twitter, some hypothesized that this could work if news organizations were given access to all tweets on a given topic as well as the power to curate the stream.

Back then my colleague MG Siegler said there was clearly something to this idea. MG is right (sigh) namely because it is already happening. Humans are functioning as defacto news aggregators using the publication tools already available. This, while not a novel idea, really hit home in the past two weeks with the two subsequent revolutions in Tunisia and Egypt.

Run Android 2.3 Gingerbread on your x86 computer

Sure, Android is designed to run on ARM devices, but that doesn't mean it can't run on an x86 system. Older versions of Android were ported, so it's no surprise to see that an enterprising developer has managed to put together a working version of Gingerbread which you can install on your desktop or laptop.

You'll need a 64-bit build environment and the Java 1.6 to get the ball rolling, and you shouldn't expect all your hardware to work. At the moment, only wireless and audio are working -- but that's certainly enough to let you play around with Gingerbread and enjoy the experience a little. Head on over to developer cwhuang's site [machine translated] for more details, as well as the Git repo link you'll need to pull down his Gingerbread x86 code.

Motorola Connected Music Player for Android is packed with awesomeness

motorola connected music player android Motorola's new Connected Music Player isn't the first leaked audio app we've seen -- but it's certainly got a leg up on the one we saw from Google. CMP goes way beyond shuffling through your music and video library, building in a ton of (predictably enough) connected features.

Let's start with the radio. CMP includes both SHOUTcast integration and the ability to tap into your phone's FM radio hardware. Soundhound support is also built-in, allowing you to identify unknown tracks anywhere you've got an Internet connection. The video tab will play your locally-stored videos and it's also got a YouTube search option -- though it's limited to finding music videos. The app's Community section leads you to TuneWiki charts, and Twitter and Facebook audio hotness courtesy of Blip.fm. It also features a cool Music Maps option, which lets you see who's listening to what -- either near your location or anywhere else in the world (my neck of the woods is unsurprisingly quiet and showed only me).

From the player's now playing screen you can Blip what you're listening to, add the track to a playlist, delete it from your library, or set it to your ringtone. Want to gently drift off to sleep as you listen to your playlist? No problem, just head to the settings screen and set up the sleep timer.

Jabber celebrates 12th birthday

XMPP turns 12Jabber, the universal chat protocol latterly known as XMPP (Extensible Messaging and Presence Protocol), has just celebrated its 12th birthday. Kicking off in January of 1999, the open technology protocol for instant messaging then known as Jabber, quickly gained favor. But it wasn't until the formation of the XMPP working group in 2002, and then later the integration of the open protocol by Google, Aol, and many others to enable cross-protocol chatting, that XMPP became a household name.

So happy birthday XMPP, thanks for 12 years of open, multi-protocol chatting. It wouldn't have been the same without you.

Announcing the GOOD Energy Issue Party

Mark your calendar for Thursday, February 24.

We're trying something new here at GOOD, and we need you all to get involved. One of the frustrations of putting out a magazine is that we send it to our subscribers and to newsstands, and then that's pretty much it. We'll post the stories online, we'll get a few comments and emails, and the occasional, traditionally posted "Letter to the Editor" (and bless you folks who send those!), but the issue is out, and we move on.

We think we can do better.

Energy Issue, good energy meetup, meetup, good energy, energy101, good energy 101, So now, after releasing the Energy Issue, which hopefully helped you learn some basics about this incredible thing that makes our entire world work, we want you all to get together and keep learning.

Introducing the GOOD Energy Issue Party: the very first distributed, coordinated global meetup of the GOOD community.

We envision GOOD meetups as informal, fun gatherings organized by GOOD community members, for the GOOD community members. They should be a great way to meet other people who give a damn near you, to chat about things that matter, throw ideas around, and learn some things. In this case, to better understand energy, and to have a good time doing so.

Here's how it'll work. The very fine folks at Meetup.com ("Use the internet to get off the internet") have this new platform called Meetup Everywhere. It's a simple way for communities like ours to, well, meetup everywhere. It's free, easy to use, and will help us connect in person and take part in something bigger.

On Thursday, February 24, all around the country (maybe the world?), we'll gather together to meet fellow members of the GOOD crowd and talk energy. We need your help to make it work. We want events all across the country and, while we'll help you in every way that we can, we can't be everywhere to make these happen. The ball is in your court!

February 24 is four weeks from yesterday, so we've got to act fast. If you're in or around New York City, I'll be organizing a meetup somewhere in the city. (Will update soon with details.) But if you're not, we'd love you forever if you make an event happen yourself.

Here's absolutely everything you need to know about organizing or finding a GOOD Energy Issue Party near you.

HOW TO GET INVOLVED

We started a global GOOD Meetup Everywhere page. From here anyone can organize a local GOOD Energy Party meetup, attend an existing event, or even step up and "claim" an event as organizer (if there isn't one already).

If there isn't a GOOD Energy Issue Party in your town yet, click on "Schedule a Meetup near you" to put one on the map. To join a local meetup already formed, search for your town and click "I'm interested" when you find one. That will let others know that you'll be there on February 24.

If your GOOD Energy Issue Party doesn't have an organizer yet, consider stepping up. We'll praise you for your efforts on GOOD and, more importantly, love you forever. Once there's an organizer, they can set the location, change the time, and refine exactly what the party will look like.

WHAT TO DO AT YOUR MEETUP

We don't want to dictate anything specific from the top down. Get creative. Think of a way that you as a group can better understand energy. And have fun at the same time.

But that said, we do have a few ideas for things to do and we'll be posting them on GOOD's Environment page all next week so check back regularly.

For those of you joining the New York City meetup, we'll have a sort of teach-in happy hour: building batteries and drinking beers. Have other great ideas? Email them to me (jervey[at]goodinc[dot]com) and we'll put them in a post and add them to the list.

Spotify secures deal with Sony BMG, moves closer to U.S. launch

Spotify, at long last, and after monumentally failing to hit is initial U.S. launch deadline of 'before 2011,' has finally signed one of the big four music labels.

Sony BMG, which represents 25% of the U.S. music market, is second only to the Universal Music Group. To enter the U.S. successfully, though, Spotify needs to secure at least Universal, and preferably both Warner and EMI too. There is no information about whether Spotify is close to closing deals with any other labels.

Microsoft's Zune, incidentally, has been available in the U.S. for some time. Zune, however, doesn't have a free option. Spotify lets anyone listen to up to 20 hours of music per week, absolutely free, with two levels of subscription: a £5/month option (which will probably be $5, if it launches in the U.S.) which removes the ads, and a £10/month option that both removes the ads, and lets you listen to your entire Spotify collection on your smartphone.

Google invites the entire world to a Honeycomb preview on Feb. 2

HoneycombNot content with merely releasing the Android 3.0 SDK, Google's invited a smattering of press to its Mountain View campus on Feb. 2 for a closer look at Honeycomb. Didn't get your invite? That's OK, because the entire shindig's going to be streamed at YouTube.com/android.

The event starts at 1 p.m. EST, 10 a.m. PST, and is expected to last about an hour and a half.

It should be interesting to see just how much more Google shows us of Honeycomb; they've slowly been lifting the veil since CES earlier this month. Will we see more for tablets? Honeycomb for phones? We'll find out Wednesday. [via Engadget]

Facebook to let advertisers use your posts in Sponsored Stories

Can't stop gushing about your favorite new gadget or your latest album purchase? If you're posting about it on Facebook, there's a chance your words could wind up used by advertisers without your knowledge. Facebook has begun allowing companies to re-post endorsements from users as "Sponsored Stories," and there's no way for you to opt out at the moment.

It's not all bad, though. Sponsored Stories retain the same privacy settings that applied to your original post. That means if you only allow friends to see it, they're the only people who will see the Sponsored Story in Facebook's sidebar. The Electronic Privacy Information Center (we see what they did there) isn't happy about this, telling the Associated Press that the ads are "subtle and misleading" and that users should object to companies trying to profit from their "name or likeness without[...]consent."

There's a good chance you already did consent, of course, by agreeing to Facebook's terms of use. But hey, they backpedaled on something like this before -- remember the woman whose husband saw her face used in a "find singles near you" ad? There's a very good chance Facebook will allow users to opt out, especially with the inevitable storm of discontent which is already a-brewin'.

The Lance Armstrong Foundation Made $3 Million On The Demand Media IPO

Lance Armstrong

Lance Armstrong's philanthropic organization made $3.1 million this week, according to the Austin American-Statesman, by selling shares of Demand Media during its IPO.

The Lance Armstrong Foundation sold 115,000 shares, plus more donated by Armstrong himself at the sale price of $17.

The foundation received the stock options as part of licensing deal that led to the creation of the website Livestrong.com.

Armstrong also received personal shares himself, but he was not listed among those who sold as part of the IPO.

Video: Insurance Chief Speaks Out from Davos on Health-Care Reform

The Wall Street Journal's Alan Murray video interviews Aetna chairman Ron Williams about pressures on insurance companies and how they are preparing for health-care reform.

Williams admits that Aetna is not increasing jobs and are still reducing head count. And while people don't want taxes and mandates on having health insurance, those who have insurance are going to end up paying for those who don't.

Williams tells WSJ:

The pressures on our business mean great uncertainty. I expect interesting debates ahead of us.

Williams raises more questions than he can answer in the video. Whose responsibility is individual health? If health care is more easily financed by a tax than by a mandate, how is there a difference?

How to share files using a homegroup on Windows 7

This week we're running a series of posts that tackle common Windows networking issues, and some tips and tricks that might speed up or improve your network stability. You can find more tech tips in our Tips index.

One slick new feature Windows 7 introduced was the homegroup, a simple yet powerful way to share files and printers among users on your home network. If you created a homegroup during the Windows 7 setup process, you can simply right click any folder and choose share with and then grant read-only access (which lets other view and play files) or read-write access (which lets them edit, delete, and add new files).

If you haven't created a homegroup already, it's easy enough to do. Before you start, head to the Network and Sharing Center (hit the Windows key, type sharing, then hit enter). Beneath your active networks, check your current network type. If it's not Home network, click the text (which should say Work or Public) to switch. Only computers on a Home network can join a homegroup -- makes sense, right?

Once you make this change, Windows will search your network for an existing group and ask you to join if it finds one. If not, you'll be asked to create a new one. Choose what kinds of files you want to share, and make sure you jot down the random password Windows creates -- or set your own, more-memorable password.

On your other computers, you only need to join your homegroup. Click the Windows key and type homegroup, then press enter. Windows will detect your homegroup, and you can click the Join now button to connect. Set your sharing options and click next, then enter your password. Now you can right-click and share folders on your other computers as well!

Can't remember your homegroup password? Open the homegroup screen on your other computer(s) and click the link at the bottom of the window to view or print the homegroup password. Once you've entered it on the new system, Windows will begin scanning your network for homegroup-accessible libraries, folders, and printers.

Egypt Protests: The Prayer Picture

At one point during today's clashes between protesters and police on the Kasr Al Nile Bridge in Cairo, Muslim Egyptians knelt to pray despite the fire hoses. A picture of the scene was distributed on Twitter by Olly Wainwright.

The New Yorker has a detailed account of the taking of the bridge:

Kasr Al Nil bridge, which connects downtown’s Tahrir Square with Gezirah’s Opera Square in Cairo, was the setting for the climax of today’s enormous anti-government protests, with hordes of police officers trying to prevent tens of thousands of protesters from crossing into downtown. On Friday afternoon, the protesters, braving tear gas and singing the Egyptian National Anthem, made it about a third of the way across before they were pushed back to Opera Square, where they seemed to disperse. After that, the bridge emptied. Police vans parked along the side, and some officers sat, exhausted, on the curb, their shields lying on the ground and visors pushed up over their black helmets. ... But as the sun began to set and the lights on the bridge switched on, an enormous crowd of protesters rematerialized again in front of the Opera House.

A truly inspiring image.

Microsoft readying official Kinect SDK for Windows

Microsoft, according to (you guessed it!) sources familiar with its plans, is preparing to release the official Kinect SDK for Windows. This follows the release of the official Windows drivers last month from Microsoft Kinect's manufacturer, PrimeSense.

The release of an official SDK doesn't have immediate repercussions, but it does strongly hint at a gesture-controlled future for Windows 8. With over 8 million Kinects sold in just 60 days, and with Windows' almost complete penetration of the consumer market, there's a big potential market for Windows software that can utilize Kinect -- and, who knows, by the time Windows 8 rolls around in 2012 or 2013, maybe every household will already have a Kinect just waiting to be plugged in.

If you haven't seen it yet, take a look at the Kinect-powered Minority Reportesque user interface. With this SDK, it could be just a matter of weeks before similar software appears for Windows, in the form of an easy-to-install MSI.

Microsoft Q2 2011 by the numbers: Record $19.95B revenue, 77 cents EPS

By Joe Wilcox, Betanews

[Editor's Note: This was a live document from 4:20 p.m. EDT until 5:40 p.m.]

Microsoft weathered the brunt of slower-than-forecast PC sales to beat Wall Street consensus for fiscal 2011 second quarter. The software giant announced earnings after the bell, for the three-month period ended Dec. 31, 2010.

Microsoft revenue rose 5 percent to $19.95 billion, year over year. Operating income: $8.17 billion, down 4 percent. Net income: $6.64 billion, or 77 cents a share. Earnings per share rose by 4 percent year over year. However, Microsoft stated growth rates when counting a $1.7 billion deferral related to Windows 7's launch in the year-ago quarter. Without the deferral, revenue grew by 15 percent, operating income by 20 percent and earnings per share by 28 percent.

Two years ago this month, Microsoft stopped providing Wall Street analysts with quarterly and yearly guidance, in a move that is highly unusual for so large and so successful a public company. I've long argued that Microsoft's refusal to give guidance creates unnecessary negative perceptions about its performance. As such, Wall Street analysts had to rely solely on their wits to call the quarter.Average consensus was $19.14 billion revenue and 68 cents earnings per share. Revenue estimates ranged from $18.52 billion to $19.73 billion. So Microsoft topped the Street.

PC shipments hung like a shadow over Microsoft results. Fifteen days ago, Gartner and IDC reported weaker-than-expected demand during fourth calendar quarter, which coincides with Microsoft's second fiscal quarter. PC manufacturers shipped 93.5 million PCs globally, up 3.1 percent year over year, according to Gartner. The analyst firm had forecast 4.8 percent growth. IDC put the number at a lower 92.1 million and growth 2.7 percent. US PC sales declined 6.6 percent to 19.1 million, according to Gartner, which previously forecast 10 percent year-over-year growth. IDC put shipments at a higher 19.9 percent and the decline a lower 4.8 percent. Both firm's numbers are preliminary.

Both firms said that slow consumer demand, even with the holidays, contributed to actual shipments. But iPad had more tremendous impact. Yesterday, Canalys broke rank with other analyst firms by counting iPad as a PC. By that reckoning, Apple dramatically jumps to third spot in global PC market share, ahead of Dell and behind HP and Acer.

Q2 2011 Revenue by Division

  • Windows & Windows Live: $5.056 billion, down from $7.193 billion a year earlier.
  • Server & Tools: $4.39 billion, up 10 percent from $3.978 billion a year earlier.
  • Business: $6.032 billion, up 24 percent from $4.864 billion a year earlier.
  • Online Services Business: $691 million, up 19 percent from $579 million a year earlier.
  • Entertainment & Devices: $3.698 billion, up 56 percent from $2.381 billion a year earlier.

The quarter represents the first for sales of Windows Phone 7 and Xbox Kinect. The company said that there were 2 million Windows Phone handsets sold in 2010, which really means shipped. Microsoft shipped more than 8 million Kinect game console controllers.

Microsoft's most immediate challenge remains mobile, where upstarts like Apple and Google body slammed Microsoft during 2009-10. But there is new competition from iPad, too. Apple shipped 7.331 million tablets during fourth calendar quarter for a total of 14.789 million in just nine months. Apple's tablet generated nearly $10 billion in new revenue during the first nine months of availability. Adding in iPhone and iPod touch, iOS devices accounted for about two-thirds of the quarter's revenue. Apple had sold 160 million cumulative iOS devices. The point: Apple is no longer dependent on Macs, which compete with overwhelming marketing-leading Windows PCs.

By most every estimate, mobiles are the future of computing, something iPad's negative impact on PC sales shows. Mobile applications are set to generate enormous revenues that may soon begin to cannibalize PC applications. Gartner predicts $15 billion revenue generated by mobile apps this year, up nearly three times from 2010.

Microsoft said that it has now sold over 300 million Windows 7 licenses (which doesn't mean all, or even most, have been deployed). Twenty percent of Internet-connected PCs now run the operating system, according to the company.

Microsoft reports revenue and earnings results for five divisons: Windows & Windows Live, Server & Tools, Business, Online Services and Entertainment & Devices.

Windows & Windows Live. Microsoft's flagship division received a double-whammy during fiscal Q2, the effects of a $1.7 billion deferral in the year-ago quarter and macro-effects in the PC market. "OEM revenue decreased $1.8 billion or 32 percent," according to Microsoft financial filings. "This decrease was driven by the prior year launch of Windows 7, reflecting a decrease in inventory in our distribution channels, and lower Windows attach rates in China, partially offset by PC market growth." As such, OEM revenue grew by 2 percent, year over year. OEM licenses declined by 5 percent. Microsoft projected PC shipment growth was between 2 percent to 4 percent.

Server & Tools. The division is most insulated against economic maladies, because about 50 percent of revenues come from contractual volume-licensing agreements; annuity revenue grew by 11 percent year over year. Additionally, enterprise services revenue grew by 9 percent, or $69 million. More broadly, revenue rose 10 percent year over year.

Business. The division was the quarter's big performer, with revenue up 24 percent year over year. Business non-annuity revenue grew by 40 percent, which isn't ideal. Microsoft benefits more when businesses buy annuity contracts, which revenue grew by just 9 percent. "Office 2010 consumer license sales more than 50 percent ahead of Office 2007 over same period following launch," according to Microsoft financial filings. "Business revenue increased $697 million or 18 percent, primarily reflecting licensing of the 2010 Microsoft Office system to transactional business customers, growth in multi-year volume licensing revenue, and a 7 percent increase in Microsoft Dynamics revenue. Consumer revenue increased $471 million or 49 percent due to sales of the 2010 Microsoft Office system."

Online Services Business. Search drove up online advertising revenue by 23 percent, that's $117 million to $632 million. Despite revenue gains, the division's loss increased from fiscal Q2 2010.

Entertainment & Devices. The division's revenue increased a whopping 56 percent year over year, or $1.3 billion. Microsoft shipped 8 million Kinects during first 60 days, which helped drive up Xbox 360 unit sales by 21 percent year over year -- 6.3 million units shipped in the quarter. Related: Xbox Live memberships increased 30 percent.

Windows Phone 7 is available in 30 countries from 60 carriers. Two million units have shipped.
