Google?s Uphill Battle With Social, Animated

NMA continues in its tech blog baiting campaign, this time capturing Google's multiple attempts to crack the nut of social in subtitled CGI format. Our ingenious Taiwanese friends have chose to represent the Buzz debacle as a guy who conspicuously resembles Mark Zuckerberg spying on a woman in the shower and Google Wave as a group of people trying and failing to surf. Google+, in contrast, is depicted as a Pandora's Box, which ultimately contains only hope in the form of the product's true innovation, Social Circles. It's perfect.

Mac OS X Lion Preview 2 released, introduces mega exciting leather bound iCal skin

This is one of those posts that could probably be condensed into a tweet: Apple has released the second Preview of Mac OS X 10.7 Lion. If you're running Preview 1, it looks like you'll first receive a small update via Software Update, and then you can download Preview 2 from the Mac App Store.

There has been some speculation that Apple is getting close to a release or Golden Master build, but judging by 9to5 Mac's initial findings there's definitely some way to go. The Golden Master will probably appear at, or just before, the Apple WWDC in June.

So far, it's looking like the only changes in Preview 2 are the leather bound iCal skin that you can see above, and the main iChat window now combines your AIM, Bonjour and Jabber contacts, like Adium. We're sure that more details will emerge throughout the day, though, and there's bound to be lots of invisible changes, too. We'll update this post when we find out more.

Untethered iOS 4.3.1 jailbreak is go with redsn0w and PwnageTool for Windows and OS X, minus iPad 2

PwnageTool 4.3 iOS 4.3.1 untethered jailbreak
Jailbreakers, your iOS 4.3.1 time has come -- the iPhone Dev-Team has updated their redsn0w and PwnageTool utilities to enable an untethered jailbreak of the latest and greatest iOS version. Redsn0w 0.9.6rc6 and PwnageTool 4.3 both use an exploit discovered by Stefan Esser, a German security researcher, best know to the jailbreak community as the man behind the antid0te framework, which implemented ALSR; a random arrangement of data for increased security against hacking.

So, if you're running an iPhone 3GS or 4 (GSM), an iPod touch third or fourth-generation, or an iPad 1 and want to get your jailbreak on, head on over to the Dev-Team blog for official links to both redsn0w (Windows or OS X) and PwnageTool. If you're an ultrasn0w user however, you best wait a little as there's a fix coming for some bugs between iOS 4.3.1 and the older basebands required for carrier unlock. Apple TV 2 owners can also get in on the action, but are limited to PwnageTool for your jailbreak needs. iPad 2 owners I'm afraid you're left out in the cold on this untethered one, as the iPad 2 requires a bootrom-level exploit to install and Apple's latest device is not susceptible to either the current limera1n or SHAtter bootrom exploits.

Amazon Cloud Player review: functional, not mind blowing, and still US-only

Amazon Android Cloud Player appIt's hard to believe: our world-spanning network, our Internet, which is the cornerstone of free speech and free society -- which, on a good day, is capable of causing populist revolutions -- is still crippled by banal geolocation restrictions. We are, of course, talking about Amazon's two latest offerings, both of which are only available in the United States. Last week it was the excellent Android Appstore for Android, and today it's the Amazon Cloud Player for Web and Android.

Along with Cloud Player, Amazon also launched Cloud Drive, which is basically just like any other cloud storage digital locker. It's not particularly feature rich, and there's no real reason to use it over something like SugarSync or SkyDrive -- it does work outside the US, however.

Its primary purpose, as far as we're concerned, is that it stores your your Cloud Player music in a subdirectory. You get 5GB of Cloud Drive storage for free, and then it's $1 per gigabyte per year if you need more space.

The Amazon Cloud Player itself will not, to put it bluntly, blow your mind. It works, but it's very much an early, and possibly rushed, release. Let's dive in to the Web and Android players for a closer look.

Olympus E-PM1's petite frame outed before launch

On the eve of its rumored launch, we've spotted what looks to be a leaked press shot of Olympus' new teensy micro-four-thirds camera. According to the folks at 4/3 Rumors, the miniature shooter is pegged to debut (alongside the E-PL3 and E-P3) with a 12-megapixel sensor and TruePic VI engine. Not making the jump however, are its brother's OLED screens, leaving the emancipated light-box to make do with just a regular LCD. Interest piqued? Start pinching those pennies now -- we hear tomorrow isn't far away.

Samsung Galaxy S II gets official for Canada on Bell, Virgin Mobile and SaskTel

We've already had some indication of where and when the Galaxy S II would land in Canada, and three carriers have now finally made things fully official (even if they haven't yet got completely specific). That includes Bell and Virgin Mobile -- neither of which are confirming a price at the moment -- plus regional carrier SaskTel, which plans to offer the phone for $79.99 on a three-year contract. SaskTel and Virgin Mobile both also say that the phone will be available in the coming weeks, while Bell isn't offering much more than a chance to win the phone in a contest that ends July 19th -- we've previously heard that the phone will be hitting Bell on July 14th. Perhaps not surprisingly, it's looking like the phone will also alternatively be known as the "Galaxy S II" or "Galaxy S II 4G" depending on the carrier.

Google holds back on open-sourcing Honeycomb, heralds massive shift for Android

Android Honeycomb
Google, in an interesting but not entirely unexpected twist, will not be open-sourcing Android 3.0 Honeycomb for the foreseeable future.

Historically, Android is usually open-sourced via the Android Open Source Project (AOSP) a few days or weeks after the code is finalized. While this departure from the norm won't affect OEMs like HTC and Motorola that have access to internal builds of Android, small-time developers will likely have to wait months before rolling their own distributions.

As to why Google is holding back Honeycomb, its reasons are actually rather rational. Honeycomb, while originally intended to run on all mobile form factors, is only ready for deployment on tablets. "To make our schedule to ship the tablet, we made some design tradeoffs," says Andy Rubin, the head of Google's Android group. "We didn't want to think about what it would take for the same software to run on phones. It would have required a lot of additional resources and extended our schedule beyond what we thought was reasonable. So we took a shortcut."

In other words, Google wants to prevent OEMs and homebrew developers like Cyanogen from rolling their own smartphone versions of Honeycomb -- it doesn't want to see the same bitter-tasting tabletified bastardization that occurred with Android 2.1 and 2.2 last year.

A sneak peek at the next version of Android Market and Music app

Android Honeycomb'ish smartphone Music appUpdate: Tech From 10 seems to be offline -- but we have lots of images and a hands-on review if you want to see what the new Music app is like.

In what is probably a bit of a big-G whoopsie, the folks at Tech From 10 woke up to find a new, test version of Android Market installed on their Galaxy S.

Visually, the new version is almost identical. The carousel of featured apps has been updated slightly, and apps now have a 'Content rating,' but that's it (image after the break). The interesting bit, however, is the inclusion of alpha and beta apps -- most notably, there's a new version of the Music app, which looks like a scaled-down version of the Android 3.0 Honeycomb Music app (see right).

Also available from the test Android Market is 'Google Gallery 3D New 10.2', 'Google - Camera v12' and 'Google Desk Clock 10' -- but, curiously, all of the apps refused to launch on Tech From 10's Galaxy S (Vibrant) smartphone. Are they Honeycomb apps? Or, more likely, are they destined for the next Android smartphone OS, Ice Cream?

If you want to try out the new Honeycombish Music app, Tech From 10 has made the APK available for download. You can also download the three Google apps, if you want to have a poke around.

Microsoft Office 2011 SP1 for Mac arriving next week with Outlook improvements

Microsoft Office 2011 for Mac SP1
Microsoft's Business Unit, the Mac software arm of the Redmond-based software giant, is set to release its first Service Pack for Office 2011 for Mac. Just like most updates of this nature, SP1 will address a myriad of bugs, and roll in most of the hotfixes that came before it into one, easy to install package.

SP1 will also address Outlook's syncing support, with the BU adding calendar support for Sync Services allowing you to finally sync Outlook calendars with iCal and other local calendars, as well as syncing iDevices hooked up through iTunes. For Office 2008 upgraders, this was one of the features removed in the Entourage to Outlook switch, so it's nice to see it finally make an appearance in Outlook. The irony here is that Outlook will no longer be able to sync with your MobileMe calendar when it's upgraded to the new version on the 5th of May, or before if you've jumped the gun early, as Apple has removed Sync Services support from MobileMe by turning to CalDAV. Nothing to do with Microsoft here of course, and it shouldn't be long before something gets worked out.

Outlook has also been bestowed with the ability to edit server-side Exchange rules, something our friends at TUAW pointed out, have been missing on the Mac since Office 2001 for Mac OS 9. The email Redirect and Resend buttons have also made an appearance, allowing you to send mail onto the intended recipient without being caught in the email chain for replies. Excel also gets some love from SP1 with improved Solver integration support, which should be handy for those attempting to use equations in Excel.

Look to Microsoft Autoupdate on your Mac starting next week, or visit the Microsoft Mac download center to update manually once it becomes available.

Angry Birds lands on Windows Phone 7, ready to explore the third ecosystem

Nowadays, you can't really claim to have a mobile OS worthy of the title if your users can't run Angry Birds on it. Good news from Microsoft, then, as Windows Phone 7 can finally be admitted at the grown-up table now that it has released its port of Rovio's epic bird-launching experience. $2.99 is the Marketplace price for the full version, though there's also the option to try out the first few levels for free. Because, you know, there might still be people out there who haven't yet been exposed to the charms of this perniciously addictive little game.

Apple TV 4.2.1 update addresses flickering and sound issues

Apple TV 4.2.1 updateApple has quietly pushed out an update for its second-generation Apple TV running iOS. The Apple TV 4.2.1 update addresses a couple of incredibly annoying bugs, which we've personally suffered from, including a flickering picture and a lack of audio when switching through sources on some TVs and AV receivers. The update should also cure the problem of the Apple TV sleeping with the fishes and failing to wake up when commanded by the remote. Apple also lists various 'stability and performance fixes' for the Apple TV, so with a bit of luck if you've got any outstanding issues from the previous update, they should be gone with 4.2.1.

The Apple TV 4.2.1 update can be downloaded either over-the-air on the Apple TV itself, or restored via iTunes.

SureFire's UB3T Invictus flashlight is super-bright, not quite incendiary

SureFire UB3T Invictus`
SureFire first announced its blindingly UB3T Invictus torch back in 2010, but it took until now for the company to get its 800-lumen flashlight out the door. As a point of comparison, the massive (almost as good a weapon as light) six D battery MagLite only spits out about 160 lumens -- so, yeah, the Invictus is pretty dang bright. Of course, pumping out that much illumination takes quite a toll on the three 123A cells inside its military-grade aluminum body. At maximum brightness the UB3T lasts just 1.7 hours, though, at the lowest 2-lumen setting it can keep (dimly) lighting your path for up to 150 hours. Unfortunately, you'll need to shell out $695 for the privilege of owning one, which seems a bit pricey when compared to the $150, 4,100 lumen Torch -- after all, you can't cook breakfast with the Invictus.

Sponsored Post: How Two Small Companies Went Greener?and Kept Products American Made

Loll furniture
This post is in partnership with UPS

Marlene Zerkel remembers the passage of the North American Free Trade Agreement as a tipping point—and not a good one.

“Three quarters of our suppliers moved to Mexico in a matter of months,” remembers the Detroit-area resident and former owner of garment company All USA Clothing. “We had watched the auto industry go up and down in the 1980s in our city. That’s when we decided to strictly concentrate on American made.”

Now a grandmother, Zerkel still advises her son Michael and daughter-in-law Emma, who run a growing online business for the company she started with her own husband. It’s just one of a number of U.S.-based businesses that are winning over customers from some of their foreign counterparts.

All USA Clothing started out 25 years ago geared towards the “American male worker,” supplying clothing to local unions. But now according to Emma Zerkel, the company’s current vice president, the company is growing in large part due to more buyers wanting to support not only local industry but environmentally responsible products.

Moving to a focus online has helped All USA Clothing go greener while reaching those important core buyers. Emma says that instead of paying for expensive paper catalogues, she can post new designs to Facebook, or send out an email to her customer email list. It’s a simple logistical solution that cuts her costs, reduces environmental impact, and allows for instant connectivity with customers who care about sustainability.

“When we started, we figured only unions wanted USA made,” she says. “We no longer have to convince people that it’s worth it to buy American for quality and sustainability. You don’t have to prove it. People know.”

Loll Designs, a modern outdoor furniture company based in Duluth, Minnesota, also takes its environmentally-conscious consumers seriously. Using high density polyethylene made from recycled milk jugs, detergent bottles and margarine tubs, Loll has been making attractive and easy-to-clean outdoor furniture since 2005. For its home base — an old concrete plant now called Hawks Boots —Loll cleaned up the environmental blight at the site, reusing existing structures and designing their new construction for passive solar heating and natural light.

The company is also committed to minimizing the carbon impact of their shipping. All Loll products are packaged minimally with recycled cardboard boxes and packing materials, and are then delivered sustainably. Loll pays a fee to the Carbon Fund, which we use to offset our carbon emissions for our shipping, and Carbon Fund in return uses that money to fund their carbon offset projects,” says Kate Lindello, a marketing and customer service specialist at Loll. “As we grow each year we’re hoping to eventually offset our entire carbon footprint and become totally carbon neutral.”

The company’s practices have translated into sales. You can now find Loll products in Holland, as well as national upscale stores like Design Within Reach. In 2005, Loll used one million recycled jugs in its products; in 2010, they used nearly six million.

“We only work with companies that share similar values as us,” says Loll founder and CEO Greg Bernson. “Customers like our furniture because they not only like these attributes, but because of the story they tell.”

Google launches all out social networking assault with Google+ (video)

Social networking has long been Google's white whale. The company has done plenty of dabbling in the space, releasing Orkut, which has failed to catch on in the US, and rolling out Buzz to the relative indifference of its massive user base. Announced today after seemingly endless leaks, Google+ represents a major push for the software giant. The service began showing itself to a smattering of users last night, as a black bar across the top of various of the company's properties. A "+You" button on the far left of the bar currently brings you to the service's landing page, offering a tour of the many features that fall under the Google+ umbrella. Get to know the services better after the break.

Everything You Need To Know About Google+ (Including What The Heck It Is) (GOOG)

google circles

Google finally announced Google+, its next effort in social.

Basically, Google+ is an amalgamation of several services we already use. The idea, according to Google, is to do them better.

We'll have a full review and impressions soon. In the meantime, check out our breakdown of what Google+ can do below.

"Circles" groups your friends together

Google Circles are groups of friends you organize by topic: Friends, Family, College Buddies, Roommates, etc.

From your Circles page you drag and drop your contacts into each of these groups, which makes it easier to share what you want with them.

Sparks helps you find interesting content based on interest

Sparks is like Google Reader, except it brings content to you automatically based on your interests. Each topic (tech, kitties, whatever) will get its own "Spark" page and provide links to related articles, videos, photos, etc.

Hangouts lets you video chat with all your buddies

Hangouts are virtual rooms where you can video chat with people in your circles. For example, if you're not busy, you can start a talk with your pals.

So, basically, it's just video chat.
