ChromeLite: experience the ASCII Web of yesteryear

ChromeLite ASCII extension
Have you ever wondered what the Web was like before the Mosaic Web browser? If you were born in the last 20-odd years, or you only discovered your inner geek recently, did you miss out on monochrome monitors and the dial-up BBS era? Well, here's your chance to get a sneak peek at history: grab the ChromeLite extension and marvel as the entire Web is transformed into ASCII characters.

Now, ChromeLite isn't really all that functional. For the most part, it simply strips images and converts text into a monospaced terminal font. There are a few Easter eggs inserted -- such as a fun message at the bottom of YouTube (image after the break) -- and some fun ASCII art, but that's about it. Rather oddly, most JavaScript continues to work -- so you can still enjoy Google Instant Search!

ChromeLite was actually made by Google as an April Fools' joke -- and indeed, an annoying 'you can uninstall this!' message appears at the top of every page -- but we're kind of hoping that Google, or another developer, takes ChromeLite and turns it into a real ASCII browsing extension with configurable settings. If anything, it will provide an easy way to save bandwidth and CPU time.

Opera 11.10 includes improved power saving features

opera 11.10 battery power
Just recently, the Opera 11.10 release candidate was made available for download. It brought a handful of important feature additions -- like HTML5 File API support and IMAP enhancements -- and loads of bugfixes. Nestled in amongst the other details in the Opera team's announcement is one more interesting tidbit: Opera 11.10 offers improved battery optimizations.

The timing here is certainly interesting, what with Microsoft's recent report on how much power the top five Web browsers consume. In its findings, Opera 11 was fairly low in the standings. While we've not seen any new benchmarks yet, we're curious to know whether the Opera 11.10 RC offers any significant gains.

If you're running Opera 11.10 on a laptop, let us know if you're seeing an improvement in your battery life while browsing!

What Is California's Sandwich? The Fast Food Burger Takes On the Veggie Sandwich

No Chart Burgers

What is the ultimate California sandwich? When we posed the question to the Cali natives in GOOD's offices, we nearly tore the staff apart. California is a sprawling state with impressive geographical and cultural diversity. It also boasts a mean North-South rivalry, which lies at the center of this debate.

I expected the sandwich question to spark a heated discussion between crunchy NoCal and chill SoCal. But the face-off has developed a bizarre wrinkle: GOOD community manager Hillary Newman, who hails from Los Angeles, favors the veggie sandwich so closely aligned with the hippies of the northern half of the state. Meanwhile, managing editor Megan Greenwell, who spent her high school years in Berkeley, advocates for the southern California staple, the fast food hamburger. Newman even name-checks Berkeley in her defense of the veggie sammy. “Between the acres upon acres of farmland, growing bounties of fresh produce (avocado, anyone?) and the inception of the local food movement inspired by chef Alice Waters in Berkeley, California, it's clear that the veggie sandwich belongs here," Newman says. Greenwell swats down that hippie nonsense: “long before the Golden State became the epicenter of veganism, raw foodism, fruitarianism, and dozens of other invented hippie diets, it was home to fast-food hamburgers," she says.

Since filing their competing nominations for California's official state sandwich, shit has gotten real between Newman and Greenwell. Essays have been penned; no-charts have been designed; at one point deep in the debate, Greenwell and Newman both rose from their chairs and gesticulated at one another. Things are starting to get pretty scary inside the GOOD offices come lunchtime. It's time to resolve this rift once and for all. Office taste test!

In one corner we have Newman's pick, Urth Caffe's organic sprout sandwich with alfalfa sprouts, Jarlsberg swiss cheese, red onion, Roma tomatoes, avocado, and hummus on sprouted bread. In the other: Greenwell's In-N-Out cheeseburger with beef patty, lettuce, tomato, spread, American cheese and grilled onions on a baked bun. After a recent lunch hour sampling, an impartial jury of GOOD employees weighed in on the sandwich week faceoff:

"I usually differentiate a burger from a sandwich." "I didn't realize it until afterwards, but I usually differentiate a burger from a sandwich," GOOD designer Jessica De Jesus weighs in. "Subconsciously, while I was enjoying the In-N-Out burger, the avocado sprout sandwich still won my vote without having to taste it." She adds: When I finally did eat the wheat bread, avocado, sprout sandwich with a side of greens, it was cold and super fresh ... The local and organic factor seems so California, and that's what drove it home for me."

"I'd rather dream than bite hype." "If for you California represents intense displeasure followed by mild enjoyment, then sure, the avocado-sprout-wheat-hummus sandwich is the winner," GOOD senior editorial designer Dylan C. Lathrop says. "But if California is a place where immediate satisfaction is key, and you want to get comfortable with new people, then the humble fast food burger is the clear winner. I tend to find myself siding with the burger, if for no other reason than I feel it's the meeting point of high standards and low brows ... If you go to Urth Cafe, you aren't going to mingle with skater kids and club goers pre-gaming in the parking lot. You're more likely to meet extras from Entourage (RIP) there, mingling about with their primed Ray-Bans and munching their crunchy sprout sammies." Eating In-N-Out "is like living the dream," Lathrop continues. "One bite, and everything becomes possible. One bite of a $13 sandwich relying heavily on sprouts and hummus makes you believe hype is possible, because that's all that lies between those two pieces of artisan wheat bread. I'd rather dream than bite hype. But I'm from Wyoming, what do I know?"

"No contest for the burger." "In-N-Out tasted fantastic. No shocker there," GOOD's Wylie Overstreet says. "It is, however, a quintessentially southern Californian institution—there are even palm trees on the bag—and remains associated as such even as the brand expands. The veggie sprout had surprisingly good taste for what it was, but was unsurprisingly no contest for the burger. However, this sandwich embodies the essence of California cuisine—reimagining a traditional food with that veggie, organic, local, freshly-prepared twist. So, very reluctantly, I vote for this sandwich."

No Chart Veggies

"California is about self-renewal and self-improvement." "Partisans for the fast food burger cry out that it is truly the iconic California sandwich, establishing itself as mainstay from the jukebox joints in the era of American Graffiti to today's California culture standard-bearer, Best Coast. The fast food burger speaks to the superficiality, the hedonism, the live-for-the-moment spirit that defines the state in the popular imagination," GOOD business editor and American Sandwich Expert Tim Fernholz posits. "And yet when that short-term pleasure wears off and the food coma sets in, California is also all about self-renewal and self-improvement, finding some way to erase what came before (grease and cholesterol) and build something better." For Fernholz, "It comes down to this distinction: Fast food burgers have spread around the country and the globe. You can get a greasy burger anywhere and revel in commodified American deliciousness. What sets California apart is the idea that at your next meal you can totally change your approach to eating and find some measure of redemption in organic veggies and lifestyle choices."

"It costs $13." My two cents: If a sandwich is to truly represent the state of California, it should be accessible to all of us. The sprout sandwich, while delicious, costs $13. That's about 10 times the cost of an In-N-Out burger, also delicious. I realize I'm selling out the vegetarian contingent with thi

s calculation, but the numbers don't lie: One sprout sandwich could conceivably feed 10 Californians once, or me 10 times. The fast food burger is the only responsible choice.

"I instantly envisioned avocados." "In-N-Out burgers always scream SoCal to me because, as a Californian, it's my favorite burger. But when I think of something uniquely Californian I think of freshness," GOOD designer Kate Slovin says. "I instantly envisioned avocados and tomatoes, maybe some sprouts, maybe in a pita. When presented with all of the above with onions, swiss cheese and on a wheat bun, it's needless to say I wasn't surprised. It was tasty with the creamy avocados mixed with the freshness of sprouts. Fresh, cool and healthy, the exact opposite of In-N-Out. Don't get me wrong, I love In-N-Out, but the sandwich from Urth Cafe takes the (vegan, gluten-free) cake."

Sorry, Greenwell: The veggie sandwich wins in a landslide.

Disclaimer: These highly scientific results have been skewed by the sandwich preferences of the GOOD offices (many staff members were disqualified entirely on the basis of their vegetarianism, preventing them from sampling both sammies). What's your personal pick for California's ultimate sammy? Start your own sandwich wars in the comments.

Windows 8 App Store images leaked?

windows 8 app store
Windows 8 images continue to leak onto the Internet, despite Microsoft's wallpaper-based pleas to those with access to the early releases. Today's installment courtesy CNBeta shows the upcoming Windows App Store, which will likely feature prominently in Windows 8.

We've got our doubts about the authenticity of the image. In addition to showing several of the built-in games which already ship with Windows, Opera is listed -- and a competing browser seems like an odd inclusion this early on. Of course, with the browser ballot still in place in the EU for quite some time, Microsoft would probably need to include rivals like Opera and Firefox to stay out of trouble. We're also not sure why Clickgamer is shown beneath Angry Birds instead of Rovio -- the game's actual publisher.

It's still early, of course, so it's entirely possible that the Windows App Store image is genuine but merely using placeholder images and text for now. Anyone else thinking Windows Marketplace might be a more logical name? You know, to keep things consistent with Windows Phone and keep Apple's legal eagles at bay.

The GOOD "Connect with People" Wrapup: Making the World a Friendlier Place

challengeconnect
For September's GOOD challenge, we asked you to do something different than in challenges of yore. Whereas past challenges found you doing things like trying vegetarianism or giving up the internet for a full month, this time we wanted you to participate in a series of daily tasks that all related to a broader goal: to connect with people. "The technology of our world is a truly beautiful, convenient, and life-altering thing," said the introductory post. "And as much as it's helped us connect in ways our grandparents never thought possible, it's also created a culture in which we take the easiest option to communicate instead of the best option."

Four weeks later, the challenge to connect was perhaps our biggest success to date, and we'll be adopting the format of small daily tasks for future challenges. Not only did we engage in new and better ways with the people around us, the GOOD community participated en masse to make the world an authentically friendlier place. Whether it was emailing someone you've only spoken to via Twitter, lending out a book you love, teaching someone how to do something, or leaving a nice comment on a stranger's blog, people actively participated with the world in a way many only talk about. Some especially nice readers even took time to send postcards and emails to our offices in Los Angeles, all of which made the office rounds many times over.

Fixing the globe's many problems is not easy work, with financial, technological, and political realities often standing in the way of progress. That said, it's necessary to remember that it's even harder to overcome life's obstacles when we don't feel comfortable reaching out to one another for support and knowledge. For all the good Facebook and Twitter have done, sometimes real change begins with a handshake and a "hello." Here's hoping some real change started this month.

PwC Survey Says: Telecoms Are Overconfident About Security

pwc-logo.jpgAccording to PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC), telecom executives are "overconfident in the effectiveness of their information security practices." That's the interpretation of the data from the 2012 Global State of Information Security Survey, which gathered the responses of more than 640 respondents in the telecommunications industry.

The survey was conducted by PwC, CIO Magazine and CSO Magazine reached more than 9,600 execs from 138 countries. 647 of the more than 9,600 respondents identified themselves as members of the telecommunications industry.

Sponsor

The results of the survey are a bit mixed. On the one hand, respondents reported increased efforts to deal with security issues. In 2010, the same survey showed that 24% of the respondents didn't know how many security incidents occurred in the past year. In 2011, that was down to 8%. According to the survey, financial losses due to security breaches are down 28%.

telecom-respondents-by-title.jpg

In 2011, 84% of telecom companies are deploying tools to detect malicious code, up from 73% in 2010. This year, 66% of respondents report using intrusion-detection tools – up from 56% last year. In virtually every category, the security safeguards being deployed have been beefed up. If respondents are to be believed, telecoms are taking security more seriously this year.

Overconfidence

Despite increased attention, PwC's Mark Lobel says that companies are overconfident. Why? There's a drastic increase in security incidents reported this year as well. In 2007, 25% of the respondents reported between one and nine incidents. Fast-forward to 2011, and that jumps to 45%. In 2007, only 5% reported 50 or more incidents – in 2011 it leaps to 15% reporting 50 or more security events.

exploitation.jpg

System exploits are up 36% year over year. Network exploits are up 13% compared with 2010, and "human" exploits (social engineering) is up by 35%.

Surprisingly, disgruntled employees and ex-employees are not the biggest source of attacks. In fact, employees attacks have dropped by 3% according to the survey, and ex-employee incidents are only up by 4%. What's drastically up are attacks by "hackers" (22%) and partners/suppliers (36%).

technology-safeguards.jpg

Even though Lobel says that telecoms are overconfident, the situation is improving. In 2009, Lobel says that 87% of respondents were "confident" or "very confident" that their security activities were effective. This year, it's down to three out of four (75%).

How can these folks justify their confidence levels? Lobel says ongoing regular testing is the key. How often do you test, and what kind of monitoring controls do you have in place? The more frequent the testing, the more confidence is warranted. Bi-annual or annual testing is not enough.

Gladinet maps Amazon Cloud Drive to your Windows desktop

amazon cloud drive
Amazon's recently-introduced Cloud Drive is a great place to store your files online. It offers 5 gigs of totally free space, and U.S. users also get access to the handy Cloud Player app (for Web and Android!) which streams music you upload to your Cloud Drive.

The service could be a little easier to use, however. Until Amazon releases a desktop client, Windows users might want to take another look at Gladinet. The multi-service cloud connector has now added Amazon Cloud Drive support and will let you map a network drive letter to your account with minimal fuss.

Once you've added your credentials to Gladinet, just pick the letter you want to assign to the drive and you're good to go. You can then copy files to and from your Cloud Drive, rename items, and manage folders like you would any local hard drive in your system.

The only downside is that the free version of Gladinet gives you a limited number of cloud interactions. Once you use those up, you'll need to upgrade to the paid version, which costs $49.99. If you work with a number of cloud-based storage providers, however, it could be well worth the price tag.

"Is This OK To Wear To An Interview?" See What Real People Think About Real Outfits

shorts

A pristine resume and charming personality aren't the only keys to securing a job, especially in today's increasingly competitive labor market. Overall appearance has a huge impact on potential employers.

In fact, 55% of the total impression others have of us is based on how we look, according to Kim Zoller, owner and president of Image Dynamics.

To sort out the good from the bad, we turned to Fashism.com, a site where users submit photos and rate outfits in real time. Apparently many people are worried about finding the right outfit for an interview.

We've compiled ratings for a bunch of interview outfits, along with our own analysis based on tips from Zoller and Kerry Preston's book "You Did What? The Biggest Mistakes Professionals Make" and advice from career expert Matt Warzel.

[Note: Fashism's founder, Brooke Moreland, is married to our deputy editor, Joe Weisenthal.]

96% of people love this look for an interview

Our take: Men should wear darker colors, such as a black, navy, or gray suit. The jacket should fit comfortably and be altered professionally if it doesn't fit your body proportions.

96% of people love this look for an interview at a creative architectural firm

Our take: A tailored, knee-length skirt with a white blouse and fitted blazer is classic and professional. This woman was interviewing at a creative architectural firm, so it would be acceptable to add a pop of color.

94% of people love this look for an interview at Forever 21

Our take: A short skirt should be 1–2 inches above or below the knee. We think this one misses the goal by a few notches.

Bing begins roll out of HTML5-enhanced search interface

Bing transitions
Bing's new HTML5-and-CSS3-enhanced search interface, which was first demonstrated back in September 2010 to showcase the power of IE9, has started to roll out.

The most notable addition to the new interface is is smooth page transitions -- the fade in and out -- and navigation tabs (maps, images, videos, etc.) now persistently float at the top of the page. WinRumors is also reporting that a feature reminiscent of Google Instant search is being added to Bing, with page elements smoothly transitioning in and out as you type in your search query.

If you want to try out the new Bing UI, your best bet is to set your locale to United States - English and pray that you're part of the initial roll out. Alternatively, just wait a few days until MIX 2011, Microsoft's Web developer conference, which is when the new Bing UI should be officially launched.

RIM details Android compatibility, apps written with NDK see Canadian visas declined

While you're undoubtedly aware that the PlayBook will gain the ability to run Android apps at some point, RIM's come clean with specifics as to which ones will run on the biggest BlackBerry. According to Thinq, engineers from the Canuck company confirmed that the upcoming compatibility layer will not support apps written with the NDK -- you know, wares written in C instead of the typical one-two Java / Dalvik punch. Also on the chopping block are those that incorporate Google Maps, in-app billing or Mountain View's text-to-speech engine. Similarly, live wallpaper and applications that use VoIP or have more than one activity linked to the launcher are also on the outs. It's been decreed then: don't expect a fantastical bevy of apps to make the jump sans elbow grease, which if we're honest, is about right given the other news out of Waterloo.

Google Talk Guru answers questions via your IM app

google talk guru answersBots -- like the kind which automate IRC rooms and Google Wave -- are a good thing to know about. There are plenty of useful bots worth knowing about, too, including the Google Talk Guru.

Just add guru@googlelabs.com to your GTalk buddies, and you can start firing off questions. Lifehacker suggests that the same types of queries supported by Google SMS will work, though we didn't have any luck getting a response out of the Guru with phrases like "score detroit red wings" or "sushi R3N 1Y1."

Still, Guru does answer a good variety of questions and it works right within your favorite IM app. It's well worth adding to your friend list, especially for getting answers on the go on your mobile device of choice.

New Firefox Nightly and Aurora logos unearthed, and how to enable channel switching

Firefox Nightly and Aurora logos
Later today, Firefox will undergo its biggest developmental upheaval ever. Mozilla-central, the source of nightly builds, will be renumbered to version 5 -- and at long last, after years of wallowing around version 1, Mozilla's rendering and layout engine, Gecko, will also have its version number updated to match Firefox.

Shortly thereafter, Firefox's new channel system will be implemented. Firefox 5a2 will be introduced as the first Aurora build, and we should also see a Firefox 6 Nightly build. While we we're not sure where they came from, one Sören Hentzschel seems to have unearthed the new Nightly and Aurora logos (see above), along with new About Firefox dialogs (after the break).

In other news, if you want to take a sneak peek at the new 'channel changing' technology that will be introduced in upcoming Firefox builds, head to about:config and create a new string called app.update.desiredChannel -- the value doesn't matter. Then open Help > About Firefox and you'll be able to switch channel, but it doesn't do anything just yet (image after the break). Here's hoping that Firefox channel switching is smoother than Chrome.

From the land that gave us the robo-care bear, comes three new compassionate tech solutions for elderly care taking courtesy of Panasonic. Shown off ahead of this October's 38th International Home Care and Rehabilitation Exhibition in Tokyo, the electronics giant has updated its currently in residence medication monger with HOSPI-Rimo -- a refreshed design that links the "bed ridden [and those with] limited mobility" to doctors, family and friends via its HD interface. And just because you're staying at home, it doesn't mean the company's Hair-Washing bot can't help you get your hair did, and listen to you complain about how the kids never come to see you anymore. For the piece de assistance, Panasonic's also gone and modded a bed that's more than meets the eye -- literally, as it transforms into an electric wheelchair to scoot you about the house. We have to hand it to the tech outfit, our latter days are starting to look pretty cutting edge.
