Toshiba announces Oak Trail-based WT310/C Windows tablet for Japan

We'd heard some rumors that Toshiba might be ditching its Windows 7 tablet plans to focus on Honeycomb, but it looks like that's not the case -- at least, not in Japan (and not for enterprise customers). The company has just officially announced its new Oak Trail-based WT310/C tablet for the country, which packs an 11.6-inch 1,366 x 768 display and runs Windows 7 Professional. In addition to that Atom Z670 processor, you can expect to get 2GB of RAM and 64GB of storage, an SD card slot for expansion, a 2 megapixel front-facing camera and a 3 megapixel 'round back, and an optional cradle that adds some extra ports. Still no word on a price, unfortunately, but this one should be available in Japan sometime next month.

Facebook for BlackBerry 2.0 beta now available for download for OS 6 devices

Facebook 2.0 beta for BlackBerry
Good news BlackBerry-wielding Social Network fans -- Facebook's BlackBerry app just got an update to 2.0 beta. The new version brings with it a redesigned UI, some new features and Facebook Chat integration.

Facebook 2.0 BlackBerry beta profileHighlights include, an improved News Feed, which now lets you scroll through your feed a little easier, and removes the problem of accidental 'Like' clicking. You can now post photos to your Wall, check into Facebook Places and update things, all directly from your News Feed.

The new UI update brings the BlackBerry Facebook app more into line with its iOS cousin feature-wise, with access to the usual profile information including Wall, Info, Photos, and Pages. A drop-down navigation bar has also been implemented, replacing the static nav bar, and is scalable 'to support new features in the future.' The notifications bar has also been given a bit of polish with a BB OS 6 'Today View'-style notification break down page.

Facebook 2.0 BlackBerry beta ChatProbably the biggest addition, however, has to be the integrated Facebook Chat, which now lets you chat from the Facebook app itself, or the BlackBerry unified mailbox. You'll even get messages with the Facebook app closed as long as you've got your status set to online.

Facebook for BlackBerry 2.0 beta can be downloaded from the BlackBerry Beta Zone (registration required) with limited slots up for grabs. The app is currently only available for devices running OS 6, but future beta releases will push support down to devices running BB OS 4.6 and higher.

This 3-D Map Will Make Teaching Astronomy a Whole Lot Cooler

universe

NASA's shuttle program may be winding down, but that doesn't mean there isn't a whole universe left to explore—and a whole new generation of astronomers and astronauts to get excited about life beyond our chunk of rock. Now, thanks to 10 years of work on the part of the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics, budding scientists will now have a better picture, literally, of what's out there than we've ever had. The image above is the result of the 2MASS Redshift Survey (2MRS) and is "the most complete 3-D map of the local universe (out to a distance of 380 million light-years) ever created."

Not only is the map gorgeous (click here for a hi-res version) and destined to make teaching the specifics of the universe a whole lot easier, the technology behind it is also pretty sweet. The survey "scanned the entire sky in three near-infrared wavelength bands," because "near-infrared light penetrates intervening dust better than visible light, allowing astronomers to see more of the sky." They then "redshifted" a galaxy's light by stretching it, which allows them to see (and map) the third dimension.

Maybe one day, along with a map of the United States and globes or maps of the earth, we'll also see maps of the universe in every classroom.

Gmail iOS Web app gains new connection bar on the iPhone and iPod touch

iOS Gmail Web app status barGoogle has just made another addition to the already feature-rich Gmail iOS Web app. You can now see a pop-up connection bar, that shows you what the Web app is doing, when you last checked for new mail, whether your email was sent successfully and whether you're working online or offline, plus an indicator to show you if you've got any email left in your outbox. The connection bar disappears when no needed, saving screen real-estate.

You can check out the new bar simply by visiting Gmail.com on an iPhone or iPod touch running iOS4+. If you don't see it at first, try clearing your cache.

Xbox 360 250GB Kinect bundle dropping to $299.99 ahead of E3?

The image above is not a mockup. What you're looking at is a screen grab from the Video Game section of Target's online storefront proudly touting "free shipping" on a $299.99 Xbox 360 250GB console with Kinect bundle. Unfortunately, your pulse-quickened click will be met with the existing $399.99 price tag at checkout. So what's going on here? Are retailers gearing up for price drops on the 250GB Kinect bundle ahead of E3 or did Target's arts and charts department just make a mistake? E3 Expo kicks off June 7th, so it won't be long until we find out either way.

[Thanks to everyone who sent this in]

Bronze makes your music collection sound downright lazy

No matter how large your record collection is, there'll always be days when you're sick and tired of everything you own. There are some pretty easy fixes to this, of course -- streaming music services, internet radio, and even the old fashioned terrestrial variety, but none attack the problem quite as directly as Bronze. The app was co-created by Golden Silvers' front man, Gwilym Gold, in part as a clever way to promote his new track, "Flesh Freeze," a hushed, Robert Wyatt-esque number, which just so happens to be the only song that it's compatible with at present. Bronze combats musical stagnation by altering the music itself, assuring that no two listens of a song are ever quite the same, running an algorithm that jumbles the sequence and presence of elements including the instruments and vocals. The changes are generally fairly subtle from play to play, taking a few listens to really pick up on what's unfolding. At present, it's available as a download for the Mac, with Windows and mobile versions to follow. It's free for now, but that, like the song, should change soon enough.

Ultrasn0w 1.2.1 carrier unlock now available for jailbroken iPhones running iOS 4.3.1

ultrasn0w 1.2.1Anyone who relies on a carrier unlock to use their iPhone on another GSM carrier, can now take the iOS 4.3.1 plunge thanks to ultrasn0w 1.2.1. The iPhone Dev-Team have worked their magic to make ultrasn0w functional once again for the iPhone 4 (GSM), 3GS and 3G, and to correct a signal bar issue for anyone maintaining an older baseband but not using an unlock.

It's important to note that this isn't a new carrier unlock, and still requires an older baseband. Therefore if you're intending to upgrade to iOS 4.3.1 make sure you use something like Pwnage Tool to maintain your existing baseband, and do not just upgrade using iTunes in the hope of using redsn0w to jailbreak, as that will result in ultrasn0w being locked out.

Once you've jailbroken your iPhone using Pwnage Tool, fire up Cydia and search for ultrasn0w to get your carrier unlock installed, then just reboot your phone. Voila! Carrier unlocked.

Big Buy: IAC?s Match.com Wants To Acquire European Online Dating Site Meetic

IAC-owned Match.com has set its sights on Europe's largest dating site, Meetic.com. Match Match.com has put in a public tender offer to acquire all of the outstanding shares of Meetic for ?15.00 per outstanding share in cash (that's $21.42 in U.S. dollars). That's a 11.6 percent increase in value from the closing price of Meetic shares on May 27, 2011 (?13.44) and values the company at nearly $500 million. Match.com actually already owns approximately 27% of the outstanding shares of Meetic, which it obtained when it combined its European businesses with Meetic in 2009. Back then, IAC sold 100 percent of the stock of Match Europe ? the entity that houses Match.com?s European operations ? for an approximate 27 percent stake in Meetic, plus a 5 million euro note.

Will someone please develop an anti-texting-while-driving app?

By Joe Wilcox, Betanews

Texting while driving is dangerous. Shouldn't some smart developer create an app to stop this practice, using a smartphone's orientation sensors, for profit and public service? There are clunky or costly options, but not truly native apps.

PSX games now available in the Android Market, if you own an Xperia Play

PlayStation One games on the Android Market
If you're lucky enough to own an Xperia Play -- Sony Ericsson's new Gingerbread-powered smartphone-cum-gamepad -- you can now buy PlayStation (PSX) titles from the Android Market.

There are five titles currently available, all priced at £3.99: Syphon Filter, MediEvil, Cool Boarders 2, Destruction Derby, and Jumping Flash. They don't have an American price yet, but that will surely change once the Xperia Play launches in the States.

Two important questions remain unanswered: How big are these games? The Market descriptions say the games are only 5MB, but that sounds incredibly unlikely -- and more importantly, will it be possible to 'spoof' the Xperia Play and download PSX games onto other Gingerbread-powered phones, like the Nexus S?

In other news, the PlayStation emulator PSX4droid was recently removed from the Android Market. This obviously has nothing to do with today's release of first-party PlayStation games.

iSites overhauled, now lets you publish cloud-based HTML5 iPhone apps in minutes

iSites -- a zero-code cloud-based 'app creator' -- can now generate HTML5 apps that work on iOS devices. With this new feature, dubbed 'InstantApp', you can now design a single app in your browser and publish it natively on Android and iOS, and as an HTML5 iPhone app.

We haven't looked at iSites before, but it shot to fame last year when it launched with native iOS and Android support. Self-publishing Android apps wasn't a problem because Google does very little moderation of the Market, but iSites ran into trouble with its iOS apps. Thousands of people signed up for the service after it was featured on Mashable and TechCrunch, and you can imagine Apple's chagrin as thousands of cookie cutter apps flooded its approval queue.

Genwi, the developer behind iSites, realized something had to be done -- it had to circumvent the App Store approval process. Genwi, of course, turned to HTML5 Web apps -- which can be pinned to the iPhone home screen and which can be shoehorned into almost behaving like native apps.

Read on for our experiences with iSites' new InstantApp HTML5 iOS app creator.

Intermission: Hey You! What Are You Listening To?

A guy (his YouTube handle is TyCullen, so maybe he's named Ty Cullen) walks the streets of New York asking pedestrians with headphones what they're listening to. Listening to music in the crowded Mahattan streets is usually a private, even isolating, enterprise. Cullen's simple project is a nice reminder that there's value in sharing the things we like, and also provides an interesting cultural cross-section of New York pedestrians. Enjoy.

THE STATE OF GOOGLE (GOOG)

We had In The Plex author Steven Levy as a guest on the SAIcast this week – you should listen, and then go buy his book – and I learned a bunch of new stuff about Google:

  • There's a division at the company called "Google X." Google hasn't announced it, but it's a crack team of engineers working on top secret projects – stuff like the self-driving cars, but that you haven't heard about.
  • While the rest of us wonder why Google works on silly projects like self-driving cars, Google CEO Larry Page is pulling his hair out over our lack of understanding. He thinks the point of technology is that it can do impossible things, and that's what  Google should be after.
  • Larry doesn't want to talk about this stuff with outsiders – on earnings calls, or elswhere – because he believes what you and I don't need to know, we don't need to know. So back off.
  • Take away former Google CEO Eric Schmidt and current Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg's titles, and it becomes clear that the two of them are doing the exact same job. Schmidt's job was to be, and Sandberg's job is to be, an operations genius building a business organization around young, visionary founders.
  • Google is more terrified of Facebook than you know. They are dying over how much information is locked inside Facebook's walls.
  • Their plan to beat Facebook – or survive it – is not to build a rival and dominate social network, but to be just "social" enough that Facebook is forced to allow Google to crawl all its data.
  • Google desperately wants to buy Twitter. The only thing that's held it back so far are regulatory concerns, and the fact that Twitter's ex-Google founders haven't wanted to return to the Plex.
  • Display ads are now a multi-billion dollar business and YouTube is breaking even. But yeah, search is still the only business of theirs that matters.
  • Actually, Android is getting close, but you have to remember: Google doesn't actually make any money selling Android to mobile carriers. It gives Android away free.
  • Also, Google desperately wants to see Chrome work. Chrome, nothing but a browser, is a more Google-y vision for how the world should work than fat-client-software-based Android is.
  • Google doesn't mind it when the stock price goes down for a while. That makes it easier to hire people on the promise of upside.

These bullets give you a sense of how well the conversation went, but really you should listen to the whole thing (And then go by Levy's book!):
