Windows 8 Explorer to feature Ribbon UI, SkyDrive and Mesh integration?

windows 8 explorer ribbon
Rafael Rivera and Paul Thurrott have posted a second look at some of the early changes which have surface in Windows 8 milestone 3. First there was the restyled Welcome Screen, and now it appears that Microsoft is toying with bringing the Ribbon UI to Explorer.

The Ribbon, like in Microsoft Word and Excel, is context-aware, adding tabs for specific tasks which apply to the folder you're viewing -- such as library or picture management. You can also make out two new buttons in the status bar, which allow you to change the current folder's view style.

It's clear from all the placeholder images and repeated elements that this is very much a work in progress, but featuring the Ribbon more prominently in Windows 8 would certainly be a logical progression for Microsoft. It's slowly become more ubiquitous, moving beyond Office and into Wordpad, Paint, and several of the Windows Live Essentials applications.

There's more to the screenshots than the Ribbon UI, however. Our friend Long Zheng has noted two interesting elements in the images: Web sharing and sync (image after the break). That would likely mean users will be able to quickly upload files to SkyDrive and synchronize using Live Mesh right from Explorer in Windows 8. That's not a total surprise considering many of the earliest leaked images of Windows 8 showed Windows Live integration on the desktop.

Amazon Appstore for Android launches with 'Test Drive' trials and recommendations

Amazon Appstore for Android
The Amazon Appstore for Android, Amazon's Android Market place competitor, is now live for Android owners living in the US. Accessible in both the browser via Amazon.com/appstore, or on-device via a downloadable app, the Amazon Appstore hopes to bring a better store experience to the Android platform, and beat the Android Market at its own game.

The initial launch brings with it 3,800 apps available for download, from big name developers including Gameloft, Handmark and Glu Mobile. While 3,800 apps isn't a scratch on the 200,000 odd that the Android Market offers, Amazon's going hard with 'exclusives' with the Appstore launch coinciding with the release of Angry Birds Rio. In fact, Amazon's currently offering it for free, instead of 99 cents, as part of it's daily free app promotion, which itself will see one paid app available for free for 24-hours each day.

Amazon's also pushing a trial-like feature called 'Test Drive,' which lets you try out an app before you buy it. The system works using a desktop-based in-browser simulation powered by Amazon's cloud services, which lets you test apps for 30 minutes before you buy them. Amazon's usual one-click purchasing will also be in effect, along with a recommendation system based on previous purchases.

Google Street View Colosseum, Rome, Italy

Now Google has made available Street View imagery of some of the most historic and impressive places in both Italy and France.

Have you ever wanted to take a look round the Colosseum in Rome which was built in 80 AD, but just haven't had the chance to jump on a jet over to Italy? Well now you can make a virtual visit from the comfort of your office chair courtesy of Google Street View. While it's never going to be the same as feasting your eyes on the real thing, it's incredible to be able to take a virtual stroll through some of the world's most prestigious and fantastic landmarks.

So what are you waiting for, point your browser to Google's Street View gallery, and take a gander at some of the wonders of the world, or seek them out directly in Google Maps. Just don't let the boss catch you on your little virtual holiday.

Telus recruits Leonard Nimoy to vet your Facebook status updates

What Would Leonard Nimoy Say
Have you ever thought your Facebook status updates lacked finesse? Ever regretted saying that to the whole of Facebook about 30 seconds after hitting send? Ever wished you had your own personal Leonard Nimoy to proof read your mind-dumps before you make a fool of yourself? Yes, me too, and now you can!

Brought to you by Telus, What Would Leonard Nimoy Say (WWLNS) is a Facebook app, which allows you to run your status updates past the legendary sci-fi actor before slapping them up on Facebook. To use the app you must 'Like' it, and sacrifice your https connection if you happen to have it enabled, but that's the price you pay to have Spock proof read your inane musings.

Check out Telus on Facebook to take the app for a whirl, and jump on over to Engadget to see more Nimoy-Telus combinations.

Is This A Photo Of An Apple Employee With An iPhone 5? (AAPL)

An Apple employee has allegedly been spotted using a new iPhone by a 9 to 5 Mac reader.

The reader sent in the blurry photo below of the person using the phone on a train in San Francisco.

The tipster tells Seth Weintraub of 9 to 5 Mac he got a good look at phone and the picture doesn't do it justice. Here's the complete description from Weintraub:

“Almost EVO-like” in screen size, this iPhone also appears thinner than the current iPhone 4 but also wider.  The edges are rounded metal like the edges of a Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 but could still function as an antenna.  The back is a curved/tapered glass or plastic.  He couldn’t tell but if he had to guess he’d say glass.  He said it looked too amazing to be built by anyone besides Apple (fanboy!).

Our tipster wasn’t able to see the front/home button and the man holding the device was covering the Apple logo for all but a brief moment when the above picture was snapped.  It seemed apparent that he was trying to hide what he had more than the average smartphone user.

We're not sure we're buying it. Apple obviously sends out test devices into the wild. But why would it have the Apple logo visible? Wouldn't it want to keep it discrete? And this photo doesn't look like much.

Windows 8 to feature adaptive Aero colorization, get it now on Windows 7

windows 8 aero colorization aura
While we've still yet to see anything truly Earth-shattering, the tandem of Rafael Rivera and Paul Thurrott continues to churn out insight about interesting new features they've discovered in Windows 8 milestone 3. The latest discovery is that Aero in Windows 8 will be able to automatically adapt itself to match your current wallpaper image. It's a bit like what Windows 7 already does with your taskbar icons: if a program alert needs your attention, the icon will glow using the predominant color (e.g. Firefox should glow orange).

And yes, you can already make Windows 7 behave this way if you like. Over at CodePlex, there's a little program called Aura that parks itself in your system tray and automatically adjusts your window borders to compliment your wallpaper images. The effect is quite nice, and you can try it out by minimizing your windows and cycling through your theme's wallpapers (right click on your desktop and choose next desktop background).

Untethered iOS 4.3.1 jailbreak is go with redsn0w and PwnageTool for Windows and OS X, minus iPad 2

PwnageTool 4.3 iOS 4.3.1 untethered jailbreak
Jailbreakers, your iOS 4.3.1 time has come -- the iPhone Dev-Team has updated their redsn0w and PwnageTool utilities to enable an untethered jailbreak of the latest and greatest iOS version. Redsn0w 0.9.6rc6 and PwnageTool 4.3 both use an exploit discovered by Stefan Esser, a German security researcher, best know to the jailbreak community as the man behind the antid0te framework, which implemented ALSR; a random arrangement of data for increased security against hacking.

So, if you're running an iPhone 3GS or 4 (GSM), an iPod touch third or fourth-generation, or an iPad 1 and want to get your jailbreak on, head on over to the Dev-Team blog for official links to both redsn0w (Windows or OS X) and PwnageTool. If you're an ultrasn0w user however, you best wait a little as there's a fix coming for some bugs between iOS 4.3.1 and the older basebands required for carrier unlock. Apple TV 2 owners can also get in on the action, but are limited to PwnageTool for your jailbreak needs. iPad 2 owners I'm afraid you're left out in the cold on this untethered one, as the iPad 2 requires a bootrom-level exploit to install and Apple's latest device is not susceptible to either the current limera1n or SHAtter bootrom exploits.

Sprint announces Q2 earnings, LTE data deal with LightSquared

Sprint

The rumors were true, folks. Sprint's going LTE with LightSquared in a 15-year deal. It sounds a little backward, but the gist is this: LightSquared's going to pay Sprint around $9 billion in cash over 11 years, and in exchange Sprint gets up to 50 percent of LightSquared's "L-Band" LTE spectrum through credits.

LightSquared comes out ahead, too, lowering its operating costs and network capital by more than $13 billion over the next eight years by making use of Sprint's infrastructure. LightSquared also will provide 3G roaming for Sprint.

So when can you see an LTE smartphone on Sprint? That's still going to be a while, with LightSquared's first 4G markets (which weren't disclosed) not going online until 2012. So, for now, it's still WiMax. LightSquared's expects to complete its nationwide 4G rollout in 2014.

Also, Sprint this morning announced its Q2 2011 earnings, noting revenues of $8.3 billion, and a net loss of $847 million

Press releases: Sprint 1, 2; LightSquared

BLIND ITEM: Which Top VC Is Quitting For A Portfolio Company Over Partner Objections?

silhouette shadow

A good source tells us a partner at one of Silicon Valley's top firms is leaving for a top job at one of his or her partner's portfolio companies.

Apparently the senior-most VC at the firm is not happy about it.

The portfolio company, we're told, is one of those new "billion dollar companies" out the valley.

The quitting VC comes from one of the big, famous Valley firms, but it's not Andreessen Horowitz.

Let the guessing games begin!

LG turns it around, reports profits back in the green

After six months of knuckle-crunching losses, LG can finally wind the window down and turn the radio on to Seoul FM. The electronics giant just reported a net profit of ?108 billion ($100 million) in the last quarter, primarily thanks to sales of LED and Cinema 3D TVs. Its handset subsidiary, which has been pushing into the Android high end with devices like the Optimus 2X, is still bleeding cash -- but losses were halved compared to last quarter, so perhaps the wound is finally scabbing over. Meanwhile, the LG Home Appliance Company posted "record-high" sales, but it'll have to Thinq even harder in future because profits were held back by higher material costs, currency fluctuations and greater competition. Definitely too soon for cruise control.

White Americans Now Have 20 Times the Wealth of Black Americans

blackhomeless

We've known for a while now that the wealth disparities in this country are inextricably linked to racial disparities. Sadly, the new recession is only augmenting that problem. The median wealth of white households in America is now 20 times that of black households and 18 times the wealth of Latino households, according to a new study from the Pew Research Center. And in case you're thinking that means whites have $1 million while blacks only have $50,000, think again: The typical net worth of a white household is $113,000 while the typical net worth for a black household is a paltry $5,600, not even the cost of a new car.

This is the biggest wealth gulf between the three groups since the government started collecting the data 25 years ago. It's also two times the size the divide was for the 20 years that led up to the latest economic downturn. Why? Because when the housing market bubble burst, minorities, who had been preyed upon by unethical lenders, were disproportionately affected. From 2005 to 2009, inflation-adjusted median wealth for blacks and Latinos cratered 53 percent and 66 percent, respectively. Among whites, that drop was only 16 percent.

That this research comes out while Republicans and Democrats are at each other's throats over the national debt is both pretty poignant. While the GOP remains immovable on its stance against taxing the ultra-wealthy and closing corporate tax loopholes, millions of American families are struggling just to get by.
