MARRIAGE AND MONEY: When The Kids Are Cold, I Turn Up The Heat -- Never Mind My Husband's Obsession With The Heating Bills

Katie Rosman

My husband and I danced a tango at our wedding. It fit us: feisty, fiery but still playful.

The snappy drama and coy humor of the dance still typify us. Nine years, two kids and one mortgage after that tango, we tangle. That we bicker doesn't mean we don't love each other. We do, and have since the night we met. And yet we spar, our default form of communication.

The U.S. Chamber of Carbon Commerce Does Not Speak for Us

nike, chamber of commerce, 350, 350.org, bill mckibben, chamber of carbon, climate change, the u.s. chamber doesn't speak for me,
We're very proud and excited to be partnering with 350.org on their new campaign: "The U.S. Chamber Doesn't Speak for Me." The message is simple: when it comes to climate and energy, the US Chamber of Commerce represents the interests of big polluters, not everyday American business.

Over the next couple of months, we're going to be asking you, GOOD people, to personally add your voice and stand with small business owners, local chambers of commerce, and concerned citizens around the country to declare that the "U.S. Chamber doesn't speak for me."

Then, even more importantly, we will join the ranks of 350.org's volunteers and fan out across the country to canvass local businesses—all those bakeries and beauty salons, colleges and chiropractors, pharmacies and fitness centers that belong to local chambers of commerce. We've be asking for signatures and taking photos and videos, all making that same proud declaration: "The U.S. Chamber doesn't speak for me."

If you're a business owner, go here to get involved directly.

For a lot more background on the U.S. Chamber's smoggy stance, please read this powerful op-ed by 350.org founder Bill McKibben.

nike, chamber of commerce, 350, 350.org, bill mckibben, chamber of carbon, climate change, the u.s. chamber doesn't speak for me,
It's a long and terrifying read, but an essential one. A couple points worth reiterating here.

This Ain't Your Local Florist/Hardware Store/Grocer's Chamber: While everyone thinks of the Chamber of Commerce as representing small business, the majority of the U.S. Chamber's revenue comes from just 16 companies. They aren't required (thanks to Citizens United) to disclose who those 16 companies are, but a look at their lobbying dollars makes it all too clear that the Big Fossils are calling the shots.

It claims to represent “three million businesses of all sizes, sectors, and regions.” The organization, that is, seems to speak for a country full of barbers and florists, car dealers, restaurant owners, and insurance salesmen, not to mention the small entrepreneurs who make up local and state chambers of commerce across the country.

At least when it comes to energy and climate, though, that claim is, politely put, a fib....55 percent of its funding came from just 16 companies, each of which gave more than a million dollars. It doesn’t have to say which companies, but by their deeds shall you know them.

Huge Money: The U.S. Chamber proudly "brags that it’s the biggest lobby in Washington, 'consistently leading the pack in lobbying expenditures.' The group spent as much as $33 million trying to influence the 2010 midterm elections, and has announced that it will beat that in 2012."

The Best and Brightest are Leaving: The U.S. Chamber's reactionary climate stance has driven some big companies like Apple to quit the organization entirely, and companies like Nike have left board because of it.

In 2009, for instance, one of its officials even demanded a “twenty-first century Scopes monkey trial” for global warming: “It would be the science of climate change on trial,” the Chamber’s senior vice-president for environment, technology, and regulatory affairs explained.

That didn’t go over so well. Several high-profile companies quit the chamber. Apple Computers, the very exemplar of the universe of cutting-edge technology, explained: “We would prefer that the chamber take a more progressive stance on this critical issue and play a constructive role in addressing the climate crisis.”

Other businesses complained that they hadn’t been consulted.  Some, like Nike, quit the organization’s board. “We just weren’t clear in how decisions on climate and energy were being made,” said a Nike spokesman.

Losing its Base: Local Chambers of Commerce—those that actually represent the small businesses in our communities that we all wish the best and most prosperous futures for—are leaving in droves. In 2010 alone, at least 50 local Chambers—from Philadelphia to Pasadena, from South Carolina to Salt Lake City—publicly disassociated themselves with the national organization.

There's a lot more to it, including terrifying stories of the intimidation tactics the U.S. Chamber has used against its political opponents, and how the Chamber believes that humans can adapt to climate change better than businesses can. (I'm not making this up.) Read McKibben's plea, then head straight to 350.org's site and sign the declaration. We'll be in touch very soon with more details about how the GOOD community can chip in beyond that.

FaceTime hits the Mac App Store for 99c

FaceTime for OS X
Apple has just released FaceTime for OS X onto the Mac App Store. The app will take advantage of the 'built-in FaceTime HD camera' or any other iSight-equipped Intel Mac, to bring you Mac-to-Mac and Mac-to-iPhone 4 (or latest generation iPod touch) video calling over Wi-Fi. It supports up to 720p video for those soon to be released Macs sporting fancy new FaceTime HD cameras, or standard VGA for all others. FaceTime will even ring on your Mac when not running once installed, and will ring on any number of Macs all using the same Apple ID, making sure you're never going to miss a call.

FaceTime has been in beta for a while now, but this marks its first official release -- so if you're a fan of video calling, and have friends with Macs or iPhone 4s then head on over to the Mac App Store and pick up FaceTime for one cent shy of a buck.

Reddit tops 1 billion page views per month

redditSince the misstep by Digg last year with its doomed V4, it's been obvious that the largest player in the social news scene has been the Condé Nast-owned reddit.Yesterday, the point was rammed home when the site announced that it had hit one billion page views per month, a four-fold increase year-on-year, and a 20% increase in just the last month.

While the troubles with Digg certainly boosted the market share reddit could claim, the rest of the analytics data posted by the social news site makes for interesting reading. It shows that the colossal one billion page views were generated by just under 14 million unique visitors, with an average time of over 15 minutes on the site at any one time, and just under 15 pages viewed per visit. Any site, let alone a social media site, would be over the moon to show that high a retention level of its readers.

Impressive stuff indeed, but are you, our dear readers, reddit or Digg users? Did you jump ship with the launch of Digg V4, or was reddit the only sensible choice from the get-go?

Android Market now offers e-book purchases

There were some interesting discoveries noted when the Android Market website went live recently. Specific URLs behaved differently than the categories listed on the site -- they ended with books, music, and movies. Now, TechCrunch reports that the Books subsection is active. Right now, however, the Books tab will only appear for users who access the it via the Market App on an Android 3.0 Honeycomb tablet.

Books are categorized, and top paid, top free, and recently added titles are also on display. Pick a title you want to download, and it's added to your Google Books account. You don't need to own a tablet to make a purchase, so we expect the Books tab to appear soon on non-Honeycomb devices and in the Web Market as well. Complete a purchase, and it's instantly available via the Google Books app.

Books could, of course, already be purchased from http://books.google.com/ebooks, but the Android Market will provide a good deal of additional exposure and plenty of new customers.

Facebook Breakup Notifier: this is 21st century romance

Ladies and gentlemen, there is now a sure-fire way to capitalize on the freshly dumped. Netizens, Facebookers and geeks: take heed! No longer must you pore through your friends list looking for easy rebound relationships. With Breakup Notifier, simply select friends who, in your opinion should be in your bed rather than someone else's, and you'll receive an email when (if?) they become single.

Speaking on behalf of romantics everywhere, the service is depressingly simple to use. Seriously, it's a 3-step process -- and to be honest, it kind of takes all of the effort (read: romance) out of Facebook-stalking your crushes. Anyone who has successfully chatted up a boy or girl online will know that timing is by far the most important factor, and with Breakup Notifier in your arsenal, rebound hook-ups are an easy, foregone conclusion.

Breakup Notifier is free for now -- but considering Facebook historically bans 'who defriended me?' apps, it might not be around long enough to make the developer any money. Better strike while the iron's hot, eh?

Earlier this week, The Register reported that New Relic is integrating with the new Amazon Web Services Elastic Beanstalk service. "As Beanstalk expands past Tomcat to other containers and developer platforms ... we are going to see a lot of traffic," New Relic's vice president of business development Bill Lapcevic told The Register. New Relic already supports standard AWS services, including Heroku's platform-as-a-service.

GigaOm reports that New Relic tripled its revenue in 2010 and grew from 5,600 customers to 7,000.
