FlickSquare automatically sends your Foursquare check-in photos to Flickr

Last week Foursquare rolled out an incredibly important and contemporary new feature: check-in photos. Foursquare is a far cry from being a primary photo-sharing site, however, which is why a quick-thinking developer has made a Web app that automatically forwards your Foursquare photos to Flickr: FlickSquare.

All you need to do is sign into your Foursquare account, connect with FlickSquare, and finish by telling Flickr to let the app access your account. From now on, all new photos check-ins should be mirrored on Flickr [Can anyone confirm if it mirrors existing check-in photos, too?]

In case you're wondering, FlickSquare also tags the Flickr uploads with the Foursquare venue machine tag, which will create a rich resource of cross-linked venues and photos. Take a look at the number of photos already on Flickr that have been tagged with a Foursquare venue; cool, eh?

Sophisticated Android Geinimi Trojan appears in the wild

Over at the Lookout Mobile Security blog there's news of a sophisticated new trojan spreading on Android devices. Dubbed Geinimi, the Trojan has been injected into legitimate versions of Android games (primarily) and apps, and distributed via third-party app stores in China.

While Lookout isn't certain of Geinimi's intent, the company believes it to be capable of receiving commands from a central server, and that the trojan can also collect and transmit a significant amount of user data. Lookout also believes there is a possibility that Geinimi could be laying the groundwork for an Android botnet.

As Lookout points out, it's easy enough to protect yourself:

• Don't install apps from untrusted third-party application markets
• Don't enable Android's "install from unknown sources" setting
• Install a good anti-malware app on your device

There are plenty of good, free anti-malware apps available for Android devices -- like AVG, Creative Apps Antivirus, NetQin Antivirus, and, of course, Lookout's own offering. Search for one in the market, or hit up the AppBrain links after the break!

Updated Android Music app leaks out

Thanks to an eager (and extremely active) developer community, early access to upcoming Android bits has become somewhat of a regular occurrence. Recently we've seen the Gingerbread launcher and updated Market app, and now a user at xda-developers has released an early version of what will become the next Music app for Android.

It's still a bit rough around the edges, but it looks like it's going to be a very nice upgrade to the built-in player. Check out the gallery, or the video after the break, or grab the .APK installer over at the xda-developers forums. As always, caveat emptor!

Leaked: Cuban Government Fears Bloggers More Than Activists

Reporters Without Borders reports that several diplomatic cables that have come out via Wikileaks indicate Cuba is more worried about bloggers than traditional activists.

In a cable from April of last year, Jonathan Farrar, chief of mission of the U.S. Interests Section in Havana agrees with a news op-ed that calls the traditional dissidents "old and out of touch."

"(The articles) might have generated a reform debate among the dissident leaders, but instead they simply focused dissident frustration with the Cuban exile community."

"Younger individuals, like bloggers" and musicians, are much more appealing to the public and are targets of jealousy by the activists.

In a second cable from later that year, Farrar underscores what a terror bloggers have become to the "GOC" (government of Cuba).

"Much more threatening to the regime are our overtures to and complaints of mistreatment of bloggers, a group that frustrates and scares the GOC like no other...The conventional wisdom in Havana is that GOC sees the bloggers as its most serious challenge, and one that it has trouble containing in the way that it has dealt with traditional opposition groups. The 'old guard' dissidents mostly have been isolated from the rest of the island. The GOC doesn't pay much attention to their articles or manifestos because they have no island-wide resonance and limited international heft. For a while, ignoring the bloggers too seemed to work. But the bloggers' mushrooming international popularity and their ability to stay one tech-step ahead of the authorities are causing serious headaches in the regime."

A third cable described the meetings between Cuban bloggers and Deputy U.S. Assistant Secretary of State Bisa Williams in September.

"The bloggers, who partly out of self-preservation do not want to be lumped in with the dissident community, were equally optimistic about the course of events. 'An improvement in relations with the United States is absolutely necessary for democracy to emerge here.'"

The distributed nature of the appeal and actions of bloggers and other cultural rebels are harder for the Cuban government to high-jack. How can the government infiltrate a group of bloggers who rarely meet, and none of whom know all the others, and whose statements are accessible, albeit with difficulty, all over the island and the world? What form the changes bloggers make in the future of Cuba will take is as unknowable as it is thrilling to consider.

Flight And Hotel Price Tracking Startup Yapta Is Raising A $6.4 Million Round

Yapta, which helps travelers book airline tickets (and hotel rooms) as cheaply as possible, has raised close to $3.5 million of a $6.4 million financing round, an SEC filing reveals. Sudan Watch: Clooney Gets the World to Watch Sudan

Today George Clooney launches his latest effort to keep the eyes of the world on the looming civil unrest in Southern Sudan that could result from the January 9 independence referendum. The Satellite Sentinel Project goes live today.

The Huffington Post reported last night that:

Clooney's Not On Our Watch is funding the start-up phase Satellite Sentinel Project that will collect real-time satellite imagery and combine it with field analysis from the Enough Project and the Harvard Humanitarian Initiative, organizers said. The data will point out movements of troops, civilians and other signs of impending conflict. The U.N. Operational Satellite Applications Program and Google will then publish the findings online.

We want to let potential perpetrators of genocide and other war crimes know that we're watching, the world is watching, Clooney said in a statement. War criminals thrive in the dark. It's a lot harder to commit mass atrocities in the glare of the media spotlight.

The groups hope that early warnings will reduce the risk of violence.

The Staellite Sentinel Project is a follow up to Clooney's documentary earlier this month with NBC News' Ann Curry to shed light on this brewing conflict. Clooney, along with activist John Prendergast, have launched the site, the first effort to monitor threats to human security in near real-time.

The Google map on the site went up today but the satellite imagery is not up and running yet.
