Microsoft Office 2011 for Mac updated to 14.0.2

Office 2011 for Mac might be the best yet, but it's still one of those key products that constantly needs updates, fixes and patches. Microsoft let fly Office 2011 14.0.2 this week, featuring such highlights as improved reliability, improved stability, and a fix to the annoying bug that made you close Office AutoUpdate to be able to actually run the Office Update.

If you have any applications that use Office, such as Endnote, or any other Office associated add-on that invokes one of the Office suite programs, 14.0.2 addresses an issue where the third-party program failed to get Office to load the appropriate document. Microsoft's fledgling Outlook for Mac also got some attention with a bug fix that would cause a crash when importing .PST files that contained categories that had no name attached to them.

The Office 2011 14.0.2 update requires Mac OS X 10.5.8 or later, and can be downloaded through Microsoft AutoUpdate or direct from Microsoft.

Google Docs gets HTML5 offline support and Chrome Web app

Google's been busy these past few days, but the fun doesn't stop with Chrome OS. Google Docs got some love yesterday with the announcement of a Google Docs Chrome 'Web app,' and the return of work offline mode in early 2011 courtesy of HTML5. Previously Google used Gears to provide work offline support for its cloud-based office suite, but retired the offline caching plug-in system in preference of the soon-to-be universally supported offline capabilities of HTML5. Google hopes to deliver offline Docs in early 2011 for 'modern' browsers, probably meaning any browser that supports HTML5 in all its glory.

You can get the Google Docs Web app, which functions as a simple link, from the Chrome Web Store. We'll keep you posted on when you can get your hands on some offline Google Docs action once we know more.

Google destroys Cr-48 Chrome OS netbooks in aid of 'testing'

Google's going all out with the pre-release Cr-48 testing, sending thousands of the pre-release Chrome netbooks to people across the US for in-the-home examinations. But why stop there? Why not destroy a few in the name of publicity?

In steps the Google Demo Lab, where 'Demo' stands for demolition! In what is best described as an amusing time waster, the Demo Labs site presents you with a Flash-based interactive video of Chrome OS netbooks being destroyed in hilarious fashion. A Gmail-type chat box pops up when you first hit the site allowing you to have a conversation with the Lab Tech guy. He asks you which method of destruction you'd like to use on the Cr-48 netbook, and shows you the resulting video. Having tried quite a few different keywords, it's obvious Google has spent quite a lot of time, and netbooks, on this kind of testing.

Chinese Trojan discovered in Android games

An Android-based Trojan called "Geinimi" has been discovered in the wild, mobile security company Lookout now warns. The Trojan is capable of sending personal information to remote servers and exhibits botnet-like behavior, the security company says.

Geinimi originated in China, and is being distributed inside applications and games downloadable in third-party Android app stores. Once the application is launched on the user's smartphone, the trojan collects location data, as well as the device's IMEI and IMSI numbers, and a list of all the apps the user has installed on his device. It then attempts to contact a remote server every five minutes to send this information.

"Geinimi's author(s) have raised the sophistication bar significantly over and above previously observed Android malware by employing techniques to obfuscate its activities. In addition to using an off-the-shelf bytecode obfuscator, significant chunks of command-and-control data are encrypted. While the techniques were easily identified and failed to thwart analysis, they did substantially increase the level of effort required to analyze the malware," Lookout said on Wednesday.

Lookout says the Geinimi Trojan has been found in versions of the games Monkey Jump 2, Sex Positions, President vs. Aliens, City Defense, and Baseball Superstars 2010, which are hosted on third-party app stores. The versions of these same games in Google's Android Market are safe to download.

Earlier this year, another Android Trojan disguised as a media player application reached widespread circulation. Unlike Geinimi, that particular Trojan sent SMS messages to premium numbers that incurred charges on the user's phone bill.

Man, who needs to go to CES anymore? Intel's frailly maintained secrecy around Sandy Bridge processor identities has been blown to smithereens today by Italian systems integrator Santech. The company lists a now familiar Core i7-2630QM (quad-core, 2GHz) alongside an i7-2720QM (2.2GHz), an i7-2820QM (2.3GHz), and an i7-2920XM (2.5GHz), confirming once and for all that Intel has completely lost its mind when it comes to naming chips. Other specs include up to 16GB of DDR3 RAM, up to 750GB of magnetic storage or 160GB of the solid state stuff, a pair of USB 3.0 ports, and a 15.6-inch display that can be either glossy or matte, with a resolution of either 1366 x 768 or 1920 x 1080, depending on your preference and budget. Deliveries are said to start on January 27th and prices range between €1,200 ($1,577) and €3,000 ($3,943).
